Box sash windows are the traditional vertical-sliding sash — the sashes glide up and down on a classic pulley-and-weight system concealed within a boxed frame. Handmade to measure in our Doncaster workshop from solid hardwood or redwood, our timber box sash windows combine authentic Georgian and Victorian styling with modern draught-proofing and A-rated double glazing. Every window is pre-finished in the colour of your choice.
What is a box sash window?
A box sash window is the classic British sliding sash, where two glazed sashes slide vertically past one another inside a hollow "box" frame that houses the counterbalance weights. Each sash is held in balance by cords, brass pulleys and cast steel weights — the same mechanism used in British homes for centuries. It's the window you picture on a Georgian or Victorian townhouse, and it remains one of the most elegant window designs ever made. Because the sashes counterbalance, they stay open at any height and operate smoothly for decades.

Box sash windows are the natural choice for period and listed buildings, conservation areas and character homes where the original window style must be preserved. Because we manufacture every window from scratch, we match existing proportions, sight lines and glazing-bar detailing exactly, and can help you meet listed building consent and conservation requirements. A box sash slides vertically on a pulley-and-weight system; a Yorkshire sash window slides horizontally.
